Highlighting Dr. Heilda Reinecke: Our Matilda in Medicine
In the high-stakes environment of our anaesthesia department, it's a privilege to work alongside individuals who not only excel in their field but also embody the virtues of kindness and humility. Dr. Heilda Reinecke is one such individual, and we are delighted to feature her in this week's Friday feature💫
Dr. Reinecke's presence in our department is like a warm, comforting embrace. With a heart that keeps on giving, she exudes a motherly nature that instantly puts everyone at ease. She also sent me more photos of her dog than herself 💜
Teaching comes effortlessly to Dr. Reinecke. Much like Matilda, she is incredibly smart, using her intellect to better those around her. Her ability to explain complex concepts with clarity and patience is truly remarkable 💪🏼
Dr. Reinecke's brilliance is undeniable. She earned a prestigious prize for achieving the highest score in the FCA part one. Yet, she carries this accolade with such humility that you might never know of her exceptional accomplishment unless someone else mentions it. Her humility is a testament to her character, never boasting or seeking to elevate herself above others ✈️
One of the most extraordinary aspects of Dr. Reinecke's personality is her ability to assert authority with grace, even in the face of unkind or challenging situations. She embodies the gentle strength of Miss Honey, handling even the most difficult surgeons—our department's Miss Trunchbulls—with composure and professionalism. She steps in to resolve conflicts with unkind surgeons, always prioritizing patient care and team harmony 🙏
Dr. Reinecke is the type of senior we all aspire to be. She is always there to bail us out when we need it most, making even the toughest situations seem manageable. Her support is unwavering, and she does it all with a reassuring smile and an encouraging word 🤗
Beyond her clinical and teaching duties, Dr. Reinecke is a valuable contributor to our department newsletter. She sends in great articles, helping us stay informed and inspired. Her engagement and enthusiasm for this initiative are deeply appreciated.
We asked Dr. Reinecke some questions to get to know her better:
What inspired you to pursue a career in anaesthesia?
"I’ve always just felt at home here. I like how anaesthesia is such an exact science, yet it feels a bit like an art form too. It’s the only place where I never feel bored!"
What's the most interesting or unusual case you've ever worked on?
"Doping a child with Progeria was definitely a highlight. And when they surprised us with a brain-dead organ donor at 5 a.m. one Sunday at Kalafong—it was so special to be part of that!"
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
"Being able to move things with my mind. How much easier would life be if you could summon all the equipment you need to theatre instead of running around every morning?"
What's your favorite way to unwind after a long day in theatre?
"Going for a long walk with my husband and our dog-child Pikachu."
Do you have any hidden talents or hobbies that might surprise us?
"I’m not terrible at wildlife photography. I also enjoy gardening (especially when my plants survive!)."
What's your go-to comfort food after a particularly tough shift?
"KFC brekkie crunch and lots of chocolate."
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
"Saint Helena Island. It is such a fascinating place with a rich history. And there is a 190-year-old tortoise named Jonathan who I want to meet."
What's one book or movie that has had a significant impact on your life?
"Matilda (the book and movie). I guess because it taught me reading books and being smart can be a sort of superpower."
If you weren't an anaesthetist, what career would you have chosen and why?
"A wildlife veterinarian! I really love nature and find animals fascinating. Have you ever thought about how you would intubate a giraffe? Hint: ETTs go up to size 75!"
https://youtu.be/lQtEbPP_Hmw?si=MGY5DWgx9yQ3vSdM. - a very cool video about a giraffe being anaesthetised!! MUST WATCH
What's the best piece of advice you've ever received, either personally or professionally?
"When you’re about to lose heart during a tough call—remember the sun will always rise and you get to go home. Also, never compare yourself to others—just enjoy your own unique journey."
Dr. Heilda Reinecke, your kindness, intelligence, and humility make you an irreplaceable part of our team. We are endlessly grateful for your contributions and the positive impact you have on all of us.
