Monday

Another week, Another opportunity to save lives, Another week to grow but Growth doesn't just happen. Everyday we are given the chance to improve on ourselves, face a challenge we didn't expect and in Anaestheisa unfortunately sometimes you have to grow faster than you wanted !

If one was the peruse the current roster and allocations, one might see the Medical officers owning theatre 7. I'm proud to be part of a group that rolls with the punches and just gets it done. So keep going guys! After all we are just the best medical officers ? I think so.

So, if premeds for Monday look like they might be too much just remember one day you will look back and be like "why on earth was I scared of that list " Growth is painful, growth is slow but once you're grown you can't look back.

Tuesday

Ok, so heading along with the growth thing, let's dive into some recap of Spinal anaesthesia physiology!

Please take note that the most sensitive nerve fibres to the local anaesthetics is the C fibres, it should stand to reason that the first sensation to be affected is heat followed shortly by cold. So can we please stop telling the patients to ' try lift your legs" as technically this is the last sensation and function to be affected. Ever heard of a walking spinal? Rather get the ice pack from the fridge and test with that. Fine touch followed by crude touch is also a method. A feather would be ideal but unless one is going to an Elton John concert we may not have that lying around.

Wednesday

Half way there! Well done, somehow after Wednesday the week accelerates. For those studying hard- this too shall pass, for those whose faaaaar away from exams what's the weekend plans?

Some ideas? I have got you covered

Hey Jeremy are you performing this year?

I know there are some avid runners here, personally I can think of nothing worse than running on a tar road in the sun while sweat dribbles down your face into your eyes and the sun burns your skin just to remind you that you are pale because your job doesn't see the sun. Naaa but each to their own ?

For those who desire to rather wine and dine, visit Facebook events this week as there are many buffet specials in the area to choose from.

If you have kids and really just want them to run around in a safe place and have some authentic fun that's monitored strictly by child minders and access control. I can recommend no better place than either Hyto Tyto midstream or drouble centurion mall !

Thursday

Really great way to relax and it only happens once a month ! Also, it's Friday tomorrow, anyone smell some half day lists? Unless, you unlucky like me and somehow perpetually find yourself in spoed... haha

Friday

To be honest I have no idea what's on the agenda for Fridays academics but our website has all the information required so use it ! yes, this is me making you actually look at other aspects of our website.

But guys in a more serious way, we need to relax, we need to rest and we need to find a balance between work and play. The highschool I attended had a saying which said" work hard, play hard and fall asleep..." I try to live by that motto. It's too easy to get caught in all the mayhem of work and feel trapped. With recent events the department has gone through I feel it's all too obvious that the machine that is medicine will carry on whether you are here or not. SO LOOK AFTER YOURSELF! But not at the expense of others, recently there has been a lot of absenteeism. Whether or not valid is between you and god but when it affects others I urge everyone to look inward and remember who you are and who you want to be.

I was taught early in life a simple truth;

"fideli certa merces" which translates "to the faithful one a certain reward".

Till next time guys
