Weekly Newsletter 13/7/25
Hello everyone !
This week we move to being half way through July and I don't know about you but I can't believe how fast these last few month are moving ! Just the other day we were wishing everyone goodluck for exams and guess what they are already done and dusted. We hope everyone relaxes and recharges for the time being and gears up for the orals.
As some of you may have seen we are evolving this newsletter into a monthly event. We feel that it will allow more time for some meaningful articles, engagement from the community and time for the editors focus on academic activities. It's not always easy to send out a newsletter weekly ! But having said this we thought it more impactful to deliver more focused articles or events as they happen which is what we will continue to do.
Moving on swiftly, some interesting events are happening this week around the world and at home:

17th July : World international justice day - Im sure this needs to be practiced a whole lot more !

EVENTS HAPPENING AROUND PRETORIA
If you listen to these guys on the daily then perhaps this is for you, they have been advertising all week.

Work Hard and play Hard
In the morning meeting the other day we were discussing Paediatric resuscitation particularly with regards to arrhythmia and cardiac arrest. What was apparent was that we needed a small reminder of some of the detail of the resuscitation guidelines. So if like me you have a memory of a sieve then this is for you! But as anaesthetists we really do need to know these like the back of our hand and the best way is repetition:

Please take note especially of the dosages and rates on the righthand side of the image ! These are largely different to adult guidelines ! As most of us have done PALS and ACLS it's not a bad idea to have those summary cards in our bags. In an emergency the mind can become scrambled and they really can give you lifeline on what to do next.
Friday academics was prof S famous stats lecture, If you missed it well then you missed probably the most helpful stats summary there is for FCA 2. However, it's not all doom and gloom! Prof S does this roughly twice a year so make sure to be at the next one ! Stats is hard because we don't do it enough but I promise after attending the lecture multiple times it does get easier and less foreign to the terms.
Speaking of Friday academics, this week on the agenda (18/7/25) is Damage control surgery by Dr Onwukike and Pharmagogenetics, genomics and complementary medicine by Prof D.
Wishing everyone a Successful week ahead ! The whether seems to be warming up so maybe get out and go for a morning/ afternoon run or do what ever to blow off some steam
Until next time
